Alumni: Greene heating up for Devils

Defenseman rolled up 8 points in 5 games

By John Lachmann

New Jersey defenseman Andy Greene recorded all eight of his points in a five-game span Feb. 2-9.

Greene picked up back-to-back two-point games in a 4-2 win over Tampa Bay, including the game-winning goal on Feb. 7, and he picked up a pair of helpers in a 3-1 win over the Penguins on Feb. 9.

NHL: Edmonton forward Ryan Jones is still a few weeks away from returning, the Edmonton Journal reported this week.

"He's still not even in contact mode in practice," Oilers coach Ralph Kruger told the paper.

Jones underwent surgery after being hit in the eye with a puck at conditioning camp.

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Alec Martinez suffered an undisclosed upper-body injury last week and has been placed on injured reserve.

Martinez already left his Finnish League earlier this season after undergoing surgery for a facial injury he suffered after being hit with a puck.

AHL: Providence forward Carter Camper is riding an eight-game point streak, having notched two goals and 11 assists in that span.

Camper began his streak with a three-point game in a 6-1 win over Portland on Jan. 25 in which he was credited with the game-winning goal.

Defenseman Vincent LoVerde scored his first AHL goal on Feb. 1 in a 4-1 loss to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Forward Gary Steffes, who had never played above the CHL level, was signed by Lake Erie and has three points in 13 games.

He scored his first AHL goal on Feb. 9 to open the scoring in an eventual 4-3 shootout loss at Abbotsford.

Wilkes-Barre goalie Jeff Zatkoff won five straight games from Jan. 20 to Feb. 9, stopping 121 of 126 (.960) shots in that span.

ECHL: Forward Nino Musitelli is back in this league for the first time since 2008-09, and he has two goals and six assists in his first 11 games for Toledo.

Musitelli recorded a goal and an assist in each of his first two games with the Walleye on Jan. 18-19, and he assisted on the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Greenville on Feb. 7.

CHL: Missouri forward Brandon Smith recorded his 50th career point in the league with his goal in a 5-0 win over Tulsa on Jan. 26.

Smith scored the Mavericks' final goal of the game with two minutes remaining in the second period of a 5-0 win, and also finished the game plus-2.

OHL: Oshawa forward Tyler Biggs scored twice in a 4-2 win at Niagara on Feb. 9.

Biggs netted the first goal of the game on the power play eight-plus minutes in, and he iced it with an empty netter.

Biggs is second on the Generals in points with 44 behind only Columbus Blue Jackets second-round draft pick Boone Jenner.

Europe: Linz (Austria) forward Patrick Leahy recently capped off an 11-game point streak with a one-goal, two-assist effort in a 4-1 win over KAC (Klagenfurt).

Leahy scored the first goal of the game 4:22 into the first period, set up the second 89 seconds later and picked up the primary helper with 14:35 left in the middle stanza to give the Black Wings a 3-0 lead.

Leahy had four goals and 12 assists during his run.
