Seventh-grader Rachel Gabbard drew a walk in the fifth inning and her pinch runner scored the go-ahead run as Highlands edged Newport Central Catholic, 2-1 in the District 36 final on Thursday.

A bunt moved the runner to second, and on a grounder to third and the subsequent throw to first, eighth-grader pinch runner Brooke Dill came around to score.

Eighth-grader Miranda Mason was named the most valuable player of the tournament for winning both games, including a three-inning no-hitter on Wednesday.
