3/27 SOFT: Orr lifts Newport over Lloyd

Junior drives in two, homers to center

Sophomore shortstop Kylie Orr’s leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth gave Newport the lead for good as the Wildcats edged Lloyd, 3-1 on Thursday.

The score was tied at one when Orr smashed her first homer of the year over the center fielder’s head. She also drove in Newport’s first run in the first inning.

Sophomore third baseman Star Yeager followed with a single, went to second on a base hit and scored on a fielder’s choice and a throwing error.

Wildcats junior right-hander Katlyn Hoeh scattered three hits and fanned 10 en route to her third win of the season.

NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 4, SIMON KENTON 1 – Freshman right-hander Haley Meyers carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning until a bunt single broke it up.

Meyers allowed just two hits and fanned nine as she earned her third win of the season.

Junior first baseman Sarah Neace singled in the second to give the Thoroughbreds the lead, and junior center fielder Morgan Martini made it 2-0 with a third-inning base hit.

Errors led to NewCath’s final two runs crossing the plate.

HOLMES 17, DAYTON 10 – With the score tied at 10, junior right-hander Taylor Brashear singled home two in the bottom of the sixth to give the Bulldogs the lead for good.

Holmes would score seven times in that frame.

HERITAGE 21, SILVER GROVE 16 – The Eagles erased a four-run deficit in the top of the seventh by scoring 11 runs after the first two hitters were retired.

Sixth-grade shortstop Marissa Cain singled home two to give Heritage the lead for good.

Freshman first baseman Maddie Mullins belted a two-run triple later in that inning to extend Heritage’s lead. Mullins finished with five RBI.

Mason walked the first batter of the game and retired the next 12, including 10 by strikeout.

Junior right fielder Payton Leighty drove in four runs for Highlands, including a three-run single in the first inning.

DIXIE HEIGHTS 16, SCOTT 0 – Junior center fielder Kaitlyn Buechel drove in five runs to pace the Colonels.

Buechel tripled in three during a 12-run first inning, and she added a two-run single in the fourth.

Junior third baseman Mary Beth Odom added three RBI, including a single that plated a pair in the first.
