3/18 SOFT: SK tops Holy Cross in eighth

Pioneers score four in extra inning

A four-run eighth inning lifted Simon Kenton to a 7-4 win over Holy Cross in both teams’ season opener on Tuesday.

Junior designated hitter Chelcey Broughton delivered the go-ahead single, and sophomore right-hander Hannah Perry also plated one with a base hit in that frame.

The other two runs scored on errors.

Fifth-grader Macy Krohman added a pair of run-scoring singles for the Pioneers.

CAMPBELL COUNTY 7, HARRISON COUNTY 5 – Senior right fielder Anna Snowball singled to right to tie it in the sixth and the Camels scored two more runs on an error.

Senior right-hander Rachael Carroll smacked a two-run single in the bottom of the second inning for Campbell County.

NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 3, BRACKEN COUNTY 1 – The Thoroughbreds scored twice in the bottom of the fourth and never looked back.

NewCath freshman right-hander Haley Meyers grounded in the first run and senior right fielder Molly Mertle singled to right later in the frame, making it 2-0.

Thoroughbreds junior catcher Kristen Schreiber plated an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth.

Meyers allowed just two hits and fanned 12.

NEWPORT 8, DAYTON 3 – Junior catcher Emily Atkins drove in three runs to pace the Wildcats.

Atkins singled home two in the bottom of the first, and she added another RBI base hit in the six-run second inning.

Junior right-hander Katlyn Hoeh also knocked in two with a safety in the second.

DIXIE HEIGHTS 11, COOPER 1 – Sophomore shortstop Ellis McCarthy doubled home two in the third and plated two more with a two-bagger in the fourth inning for the Colonels.

Dixie Heights juniors center fielder Kaitlyn Buechel and third baseman Mary Beth Odom added two-run doubles of their own in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

Colonels junior left fielder Haley Schulte also finished with two RBI, belting run-scoring singles in the third and fourth innings.
