A Covington Latin 3-pointer rattled around but ultimately did not find the net as Newport held off the Trojans for a 45-43 win in the Calvary Christian Classic on Thursday.

Sophomore forward Kylie Orr rolled up 13 points in the first quarter and 22 over for the Wildcats.

Covington Latin senior guard Maria Cuthrell led all scorers with 19 points.

SIMON KENTON 87, CONNER 54 – Two Pioneers set career highs.

Senior guard Abby Owings posted 35 points – nine in the first quarter and 15 in the third – and she dished for three assists.

Senior forward Rachel Cox rolled up 21 points and added 14 rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.

The duo scored all of Simon Kenton’s points in a 14-3 run to start the game. Owings hit three treys in the first two minutes, and Cox recorded the other five points. After that start the game was never in doubt.

The Cougars were led by senior forward Madi Meyers’ 22 points.

ST. HENRY 65, BEECHWOOD 53 – Freshman guard Paige Noble tallied 18 points to lead the Crusaders, with six coming in the first quarter.

Junior forward Karly Lehmkuhl and senior forward Trisha Marks added 11 points each for St. Henry, as six of Lehmkuhl’s points came in the final stanza to help seal it.

Sophomore guard Macy Stuempel and freshman guard Ally Johnson rolled up 18 points each for the Tigers. Stuempel now has 990 points for her career.

CAMPBELL COUNTY 80, SILVER GROVE 22 – Sophomore center Chanadie Machal led 12 Camels scorers with 10 points, six of which came during a 15-0 third-quarter run.

Sophomore guard Kylie Kramer, senior guard Ciara Mergard and eighth-grade guard Taylor Clos all added nine points for Campbell County.
