Junior guard Zach Pangallo ran off 13 points in the second quarter to help Newport Central Catholic blast Owensboro Catholic, 60-39 in a first-round state All ‘A’ state game at Frankfort on Thursday.

Pangallo finished with a game-best 19 points and pulled down six rebounds as NewCath advanced to the quarterfinal, and will play Green County at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Junior center Drew McDonald added 12 points and seven rebounds, and senior forward Jake Schulte chipped in 10 in the Thoroughbreds’ 11th straight win.

DAYTON 62, VILLA MADONNA 53 – Senior forward Austin Brockman rolled up 26 points for the Greendevils, including 10 in the first quarter and 10 more in the fourth.

Junior forward Matt Grimme added 18 points for Dayton.

Freshman guard Thomas Schutzman posted a team-best 18 points for the Blue Lightning.
