Junior forward Alexus Mayes hit four straight free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal Newport Central Catholic’s 54-50 win over Glasgow in the Montgomery County Holiday Classic on Friday.

Senior forward Nikki Kiernan rolled up 22 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and three assists for the Thoroughbreds, and Mayes finished with 15 points.

NewCath, which won its eighth straight game to start the season while handing the Scotties their first loss of the season, will play Larue County in a semifinal at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

NOTRE DAME 57, RICHMOND (Ind.) 49 – The Pandas rallied from a six-point deficit at the end of the third quarter at the Columbus North Invitational in Columbus, Ind.

Junior guard Sydney Stallman and sophomore forward Tara Rennekamp scored six points each in the final period. Stallman led Notre Dame with 16 points, and Rennekamp scored all of her points in the last stanza.

The Pandas will pace Columbus (Ind.) North in a second-round game at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday.
