Moeves hits 'Breds' decisive free throw

Junior guard Grant Moeves knocked down a free throw with 0.6 seconds left in double overtime to lift Newport Central Catholic over Cordia, 64-63 at the Lexington Catholic Classic on Friday.

The Lions had missed a 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining and fouled Moeves at the other end in the final second.

Thoroughbreds junior forward Drew McDonald hit a short shot off an inbound play in the final seconds of the first overtime to force the second extra session.

McDonald finished with 22 points, senior center Jake Schulte added 15 and sophomore center Ben Weyer chipped in 15 for NewCath, which will play Pleasure Ridge Park at noon on Saturday in a quarterfinal.

CAMPBELL COUNTY 70, ST. HENRY 63 – Camels senior guard Corey Holbrook hit a 3-pointer to open his scoring, eclipsing the 1,000-point mark for his career.

Holbrook started the game with 998.

Junior forward Deandre Jackson led Campbell County with 16 points, 12 of which came during the pivotal third quarter. Holbrook had 15 points and sophomore center Matt Wilson rolled up 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Crusaders senior guard Nick Rechtin led all scorers with 21 points.

BROSSART 71, LARUE COUNTY 61 – Senior forward Alex Trentman scored a season-high 35 points for the Mustangs, who advanced to the semifinals of the Henry County Invitational.

Senior center Drew Burns added 19 points for Brossart in its first of two games on the day.

BROSSART 55, LOUISVILLE DeSALES 45 – The Mustangs advanced to the Henry County Invitational championship game with their second win of the day.

Trentman scored 27 points – giving him 62 for the day – including 11 in the fourth quarter as Brossart pulled away late. He converted a clutch three-point play midway through the final period to help seal it.

The final will be at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

NEWPORT 87, PENDLETON COUNTY 70 – Sophomore guard Ethan Snapp scored 15 of his points during the Wildcats’ 50-point first half at the Bracken County Tournament.

Snapp finished with a game-high 20 points, and sophomores center Kameron Covington and guard Brian Ochoa added 16 points each.

Covington also pulled down 12 rebounds, and Ochoa scored nine of his points in a 30-point second quarter.

Newport will play host Bracken County in the fifth-place game at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday.

COVINGTON CATHOLIC 57, SARASOTA (Fla.) MOONEY 38 – Senior guard Nick Ruthsatz scored eight fourth-quarter points to help the Colonels pull away in the second round of the Suncoast Holiday Classic in Sarasota.

Ruthsatz finished with 19 points, and junior forward Bo Schuh added 10, with six coming in the final stanza.

CovCath will play in the third round of the tournament at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

BULLITT EAST 66, BOONE COUNTY 57 – The Rebels closed to within three, 46-43 early in the fourth quarter but not erase the deficit at the Lloyd Invitational.

Senior center Brannen McDonald came off the bench to score 16 points and grab eight rebounds for Boone County. Senior forward Hunter Hixenbaugh racked up 14 points for the Rebels, who will play Scott at noon on Saturday.

BRACKEN COUNTY 52, BEECHWOOD 47 – Junior guard Jacob Huff tallied 15 points, including eight in the second quarter, to lead the Tigers in the losing effort at the Bracken County Tournament.

A key difference was getting to the foul line. The Polar Bears shot 30 free throws, sinking 20, and Beechwood had half of those attempts, finishing 12-for-15.

Junior forward Jon Stokes added 10 points for the Tigers, who will play Pendleton County at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
