Cougars can't hit last-second shot

Conner missed a shot in the closing seconds as Cooper held on to edge the Cougars, 60-58 on Tuesday.

Trailing by three with 3.5 seconds remaining, Conner sophomore guard Michael Scott was fouled and made his first free throw. He intentionally missed the second attempt and grabbed his own rebound but was unable to sink the ensuing field goal attempt.

Freshman guard Sean McNeil scored 15 of his team-best 21 points in a first quarter that saw the Jaguars jump out to a 14-point lead.

Cougars senior forward Samuel Hemmerich led all scorers with 29 points.

HOLMES 74, BROSSART 51 – Junior guard James Bolden scored 37 points – 24 in the first half and 13 after the break – for the Bulldogs.

Holmes senior forward Quinton Chames was held scoreless in the first half but rolled up 16 points in the second half.

Chames netted 10 points in the third quarter, which the Bulldogs started with a 17-0 run that sealed the game.

Senior forward Marcus Hill blocked five shots for Holmes, which won its fourth straight game to open the season.

BOONE COUNTY 66, RYLE 58 – Junior Brenden Stanley tallied a game-best 18 points as the Rebels remained unbeaten through four games.

Junior junior Stockwell added 12 points for Boone County.

The Raiders were led by senior guard Tanner White’s 13 points.

CAMPBELL COUNTY 102, CALVARY CHRISTIAN 38 – Senior guard Corey Holbrook finished with a game-high 24 points in the Camels’ win.

Holbrook scored 14 in the first quarter, and junior guard Blake Losey added 10 in the opening frame. Losey hit three 3-pointers in the game and tallied 19 points.

COVINGTON CATHOLIC 72, ST. HENRY 37 – Senior guard Nick Ruthsatz scored nine points in the first quarter and six in the second as the Colonels took a 41-19 lead by halftime.

Ruthsatz, who hit a pair of threes in the opening period, led all scorers with 22 points.

Senior guard Ben Heppler added nine points for CovCath, including six in a second quarter that saw the Colonels hold the Crusders without a field goal.
