STEELERS 30, BENGALS 20: Punter Kevin Huber’s worst nightmare began when he fumbled a snap and was tackled at the 1, leading to a Steeler TD. It ended with a bone-crushing blow to the jaw. Down 24-0, it was KO for CIN. (Justin K. Aller/Getty Images)
CINCINNATI – The Bengals are scrambling to find a new punter with only two games to go and a playoff berth on the line.
Kevin Huber, one of the league's top punters, is out for the rest of the regular season after getting a broken jaw against the Steelers Sunday night.
Huber's jaw was wired shut after the game. He was scheduled for surgery Monday.
The Bengals said they would bring in some punters for tryouts Tuesday.
The league is expected to fine Steelers linebacker Terence Garvin after reviewing the video of his helmet-to-helmet hit on Huber. Garvin blindsided Huber as the punter lined up to try to stop Will Allen on Allen’s 67-yard TD punt return. Garvin was not flagged on the play.
Bengals kicker Mike Nugent took over Huber's punting duties, and quarterback Andy Dalton took over as holder. Nugent punted twice for a 40-yard average, but both punts were low and benefited from a long bounce.
The Bengals will probably assign someone else to holder duties the rest of the season.
Huber was eighth in the league in net punting average (40.5 yards).
