CINCINNATI -- With Mike Zimmer leaving to coach the Minnesota Vikings and Paul Guenther promoted to defensive coordinator, the Bengals have some rebuilding to do with their defensive coaching staff.
The team moved to shore up the coaching staff Tuesday when it announced the hiring of Vance Joseph, 41, as defensive backs coach.
Joseph has spent eight of his nine NFL season as a DBs coach, including his last three seasons at Houston.
The team said Joseph will team with incumbent DBs coach Mark Carrier to direct the largest position group on the roster.
“With the continued increased emphasis on the passing game in the NFL, it’s crucial for us to expand our coaching strength in this area,”head coach Marvin Lewis said in a release. “Vance has excellent experience and has coached a lot of good young players. We feel fortunate to have been able to sign him up for this important job.”
Joseph spent six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers before leaving for Houston.
“I’m happy for this opportunity, to join a team that’s on the rise,” Joseph said in a release, “and this team has a great group of players to work with. I consider myself a very positive coach in the way I work with players, and I put a lot of stress on great technique. I believe I can get those technique points across very well.”
The Texans ranked third in the NFL in fewest passing yards allowed and seventh overall on defense last season.
Joseph is a native of Marrero, La. And played as a quarterback in college at Colorado. He made the transition to cornerback in the NFL and played for the New York Jets in 1995 and Indianapolis Colts in 1996.
