MLB Draft: Xavier pitcher Vinny Nittoli selected by Seattle Mariners

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball player Vinny Nittoli was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 25th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

"I am excited for Vinny and his family," said XU manager Scott Googins. "He has worked hard and overcome a lot of adversity to fulfill his dreams. He has had a big impact on our program and I'm extremely proud of Vinny."

A native of Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, Nittoli closed the 2014 season with a 6-4 mark and was named an All-Big East First Team honoree. The fifth-year senior led the Musketeers with a 2.38 ERA, while helping XU to a conference championship and the program's second appearance in the NCAA tournament.

The right-handed throwing Nittoli jump-started Xavier's run in the Big East tournament. He worked eight innings of two-run ball against St. John's to propel the Musketeers to their first win en route to the conference crown.

In 51 career starts, which ranks fourth all-time at Xavier, Nittoli amassed a 19-12 record. The 19 wins rank fifth all-time at XU. Nittoli has also left his mark in Xavier's record books with 280 innings pitched (seventh), 3.54 earned run average (10th) and 186 strikeouts (t-ninth).

Nittoli is the first Musketeer drafted since Seth Willoughby was taken in the fourth round by the Colorado Rockies with the 138th overall pick in the 2012 draft.
