Cincinnati Reds vs. Pittsburgh Pirates: Familiar foes meet in sixth playoff series

PITTSBURGH - The Reds have played the Pirates in the postseason more than any other team.

They have met five times – 1970, 1972, 1975, 1979 and 1990 – with the Reds winning four times and losing only in 1979.

The most exciting and legendary meeting was in 1972. The series was tied going into the deciding Game 5 at Riverfront Stadium. The Pirates led 3-2 going into the bottom of the ninth.

Johnny Bench hit one of the most memorable home runs in that stadium’s history to tie the game.

Later in the inning, Pirates pitcher Bob Moose threw a wild pitch to Hal McRae and George Foster,  who was pinch running for Tony Perez, raced home with the winning run.

In 1979, the Reds and Pirates met in the postseason for the fourth time in 10 years. Willie Stargell’s “We Are Family” crew rolled over the Reds, sweeping the series.

Stargell had two home runs and six RBI and won the series MVP.

Cincinnati native Dave Parker batted .333 in the series.

When they last met, in 1990, the Pirates had a young Barry Bonds and the series came down to Game 6 at Riverfront Stadium.

Glenn Braggs was a power-hitting strongman who could break bats like twigs, but he’ll always be remembered for leaping at the wall to catch a potential home run ball by Carmelo Martinez and send Lou Piniella’s Reds on to their World Series sweep of the A’s.
