CINCINNATI - Reds right fielder Jay Bruce won his second straight National League Silver Slugger Award representing the best offensive player at each position.
"It means a ton, it really does," Bruce said after the award was announced Wednesday evening. "This is my second one and it doesn't feel any less exciting, that's for sure. To have had the best offensive season in your league for your position is something I don't take lightly.
“Frankly, it's part of what I'm supposed to do as a right fielder. In my opinion, these are the types of seasons I'm supposed to have."
Bruce, 26, led all major-league right fielders in HRs (30), RBI (109), doubles (43) and extra-base hits (74) in 2013.
Voting was done by the league's managers and coaches.
Bruce was the Reds' leader in total bases, doubles, HR and RBI and ranked in the NL Top 10 in HR (3rd), RBI (T2nd), total bases (4th), doubles (T3rd) and extra-base hits (2nd).
He joined Frank Robinson and Dave Parker as the only players in Reds history with at least 40 doubles, 30 homers and 100 RBI in a season.
Bruce said he is eager to play for new manager Bryan Price, but he admitted some regrets at the firing of Dusty Baker, the only Reds manager he has known.
"I'd be lying if I said it didn't affect me a little bit," Bruce said. "I think the transition is going to be very, very smooth when it comes to Bryan and the relationships he's already made with the players. He's done a great job with that.
"For me, I just make sure I handle my things in the offseason. Bryan has already reached out to me. I think it's going to be a great year, and hopefully great years to come for the Reds."
Bruce was also a finalist for the 2013 Gold Glove as the best defensive right fielder in the NL, but he did not win.
Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips won his fourth Gold Glove.
