SURPRISE, Ariz.— Johnny Cueto gave up six runs as the Reds lost to the Kansas City Royals 9-5 Tuesday.
Eric Hosmer hit a solo homer off Cueto in the second inning and Salvador Perez followed with a three-run shot in the third.
Cueto also gave up triples to Billy Butler and Alex Gordon in the third inning as the Royals (4-2) batted around and scored five runs.
Cueto allowed seven hits and struck out four in 2 2/3 innings.
Robert Stephenson, the Reds' top pitching prospect, gave up two runs and five hits in two innings.
Ryan Ludwick and Todd Frazier hit for back-to-back homers for the Reds (3-4) in a four-run first off left-hander Danny Duffy.
Billy Hamilton did not play.
