Cincinnati Reds call up Donald Lutz, option Neftali Soto to Louisville

CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati Reds called up OF/1B Donald Lutz Friday and optioned INF Neftali Soto to AAA Louisville.

Lutz began the season at Class AA Pensacola and hit a torrid .360 with six home runs in 23 games. He was promoted to Louisville on May 17 and hit .200 with one homer in five games.

With Joey Votto on the DL, Lutz is expected to play first base when Brayan Pena catches.

Lutz hit .241 in 34 games for the Reds last year.

Soto was hitting .107 (3-for28) in 13 games this year.

Pitcher Mat Latos will begin a rehab assignment at Louisville on Sunday. He is expected to throw 50-60 pitches.

Latos has not pitched for the Reds this season after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on the first day of spring training and developing elbow soreness.
