The majority of Americans think the United States should use military force against North Korea if South Korea were attacked, according to a national poll.

A Gallup poll released Thursday surveyed 540 U.S. adults, asking them "If North Korea attacks South Korea, should the U.S. help defend South Korea with U.S. military forces, or not?"

Of those, 55 percent answered yes, while 34 percent said no. Another 10 percent didn't know or had no opinion, according to Gallup data.

Tensions have risen considerably in recent months as North Korean president Kim Jong Un continues to threaten nuclear armament.

On Monday, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon had strong words for the North Korean government, calling a potential nuclear test a "provocative act."
