West Chester family looks for answers in daughter's shooting death

WEST CHESTER, Ohio -- Two people are dead after a domestic-related shooting in West Chester early Wednesday.

Investigators said they believe 34-year-old Brian Dunn shot and critically wounded his ex-wife, Candi Dunn, 32 around 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police said Dunn’s ex-wife was found shot in the driveway of the Barret Road home. She later succumbed to her injuries.

9 On Your Side reporter Natasha Williams spoke with Candi's father Wednesday afternoon.

"Your daughter has been shot," Kevin Caudill said, "it's hard to bear, you know, is this for real, it's like a dream."

He said he knew things weren't perfect between Brian and Candi, but he never thought it would end in a tragedy.

"At this time I am just numb," he said.

According to Caudill, Candi was a beautiful girl who was full of life.

Candi Dunn and Brian were in the middle of a divorce and the couple did not live together. The family said she was at the home visiting their children at the time of the shooting.

The grandmother living in the home was awakened by gunfire and called 911. She stated that Dunn had left the scene, according to officers.

Dunn was found dead from a gunshot wound in his jeep in the 800 block of Trustway Court in Mason.

A neighbor told 9 On Your Side that this wasn't the first domestic run-in for the Dunns.

Candi Dunn’s stepfather said Brian Dunn tried to get a restraining order against her earlier but it was dismissed earlier this year.

The couple has three children. A 14-year-old boy, a 13-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son all left orphaned after Wednesday's shooting.

"I got three grandchildren," Caudill said, "who witnessed some of this and I am sure their minds are wrecked."

A second fatal domestic shooting happened in Butler County just days ago , taking the life of a Fairfield mom.
