WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A miraculous buzzer-beating shot lifted a New York high school boys' basketball team to a sectional championship Sunday afternoon.
Khalil Edney intercepted a lobbed ball from a player on the Mount Vernon team with 0.2 seconds remaining on the clock and heaved the ball three-quarters the length of the court into the basket to give New Rochelle a 61-60 victory over its archrival.
"We ran the play where we get the ball to halfcourt…They got the ball and threw it back to their basket to one of his teammates," Edney told the Mount Vernon Daily Voice about the play leading up to his last-second heroics. "I had to get the shot off as fast as I could."
After the final horn had sounded and Edney's shot had been made, fans and players for both teams celebrated the victory. The referees originally ruled the shot came after the buzzer, but they eventually changed their ruling after a brief discussion.
The victory earned New Rochelle a berth in a state regional semifinal game.
The game was televised so viewers had a chance to watch Edney's first game-winning shot live.
