LEBANON, Ohio - A former Mason High School teacher accused of having sex with several male students says she doesn't recall the alleged incidents.
Prosecutors say Stacy Schuler had sex with seven students last fall on five different days.
Two of the alleged victims testified Monday that it happened at Schuler's home in Springboro.
Schuler, 33, was a health and gym teacher at Mason High School before she resigned in February after her arrest. Schuler waived her right to a jury trial and opted for a judge to hear her case instead.
During opening statements Monday, Schuler's attorneys said if the state can prove these allegations, they happened because Schuler's manic episodes were exasperated by an anti-depressant and magnified by the use of alcohol. They say she has been diagnosed with several mental illnesses including bipolar disorder.
"We don't know that any of the events even occurred because Stacy has no memory of any of these events. If the state shows that these events occurred, then, at those times, Stacy Schuler was insane," said Charles H. Rittgers.
Schuler has entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.
The two alleged victims who testified Monday both told Judge Robert Peeler that they were 17 when they had sex with Schuler. They are now college students.
One of the young men testified that he, and the other former student who testified Monday, went to Schuler's home and smoked marijuana with Schuler in her kitchen. The student testified that Schuler made smoothies with vodka.
One says, that same night, when he was alone with with Schuler, she told him he could do whatever he wanted to her. He was so surprised he told his friend who was in another room. He said they were laughing about it.
"Stunned. We had no idea that this was going to happen and we're like, what's going on? We think she wants to have sex with us," testified the former student.
Police learned about the alleged sex with students after a parent found out and called the school to investigate. If convicted, Schuler faces up to five years in prison on each of the sex counts.
The prosecution is expected to call 10 more witnesses, including several other alleged victims before the defense will begin to present its case.
