COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A sentencing hearing for an Ohio man who caused a fatal wrong-way crash after a night of drinking began with a video of him confessing being played in court.

Matthew Cordle was sentenced to 6 1/2 years on Wednesday for the June accident that killed 61-year-old Vincent Canzani. Earlier in September, he pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide

Prosecutors asked for the maximum sentence, saying the 22-year-old Cordle drove despite a history of blackouts after heavy drinking.

Cordle's attorneys asked for a sentence below the maximum to send a message about the value of taking responsibility for a tragedy.

Cordle confessed to the crime in an online video that went viral.

During Wednesday's hearing, the judge read a letter from Canzini's ex-wife that said she believed Cordle was sincere when he promised in the video never to drink and drive again.
