Ohio city named among bleakest places to live in the world

When you think about some of the gloomiest, unhappiest and most melancholy places on earth, does Ohio come to mind?

According to a list of the bleakest places on earth, the answer is -- yes.

Buzzfeed ranked the 12 saddest places on earth and Youngstown, Ohio ranked at No. 9.

Why, you might ask, is Youngstown being compared to cities within Bangladesh, Nigeria and Russia?

They say the city scored a spot on the list for a few reasons:

  • The city fell victim to the collapse of the steel industry in the 1970s, when mills closed and scrapyards took their place
  • The city has experienced net migration of residents for two decades
  • The city has suffered a 60 percent drop in population since 1960
