COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Attorney General Mike DeWine says about 6,000 properties around Ohio have been demolished in the past two years under a program targeting abandoned and blighted homes.
The Demolition Grant Program announced in February 2012 is meant to help with neighborhood revitalization. It funds demolitions using money from a national settlement with major mortgage servicers.
DeWine says more than $28.4 million has been reimbursed for demolitions. That includes more than 2,500 demolitions in northeast Ohio's Cuyahoga County.
DeWine's office had allocated $75 million for demolition grants. The amount set aside for each county is based on its percentage of foreclosures from 2008 to 2010. Matching funds are required for some allocations.
Fulton, Mercer and Pickaway counties have used up their allocations. Other counties have until May to use their allocations.
