New text scam says victims are threatened with death, told pay protection money to live

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) -- Police in Bowling Green are warning people not to respond should they receive a text message saying a contract has been put on their life and asking for money.

Officer Ronnie Ward told the Daily News that a woman in the city recently received such a message, but investigators could not track down where it originated.

Ward says the text message said there was a threat to the woman's life. The texter asked for $1,500 to be sent through Western Union and then another $1,500 after the first payment was received. Ward says the woman was promised protection from harm if she paid.

Ward says anyone receiving such a message should tell the sender to stop contacting them and file a report with the police.
