BARDSTOWN, Ky. — The fallen hero posters may have faded over the past three years, but the heartache and the mystery have not, as the 2013 ambush of Bardstown Police Officer Jason Ellis remains unsolved.

As WCPO has covered in depth, there remain more questions than answers surrounding Ellis’ May 25, 2013, death while on his way home to his wife and two young sons, in the middle of bourbon country.

Exit 34: The last watch of Officer Jason Ellis

The crime remains unsolved today, despite the thousands of tips and hundreds of leads that surfaced in the weeks and months following Ellis’ death.

A lengthy investigation found that someone blocked Ellis’ typical route home with roadway debris at Exit 34 on the Bluegrass Parkway near Bardstown. When Ellis’ exited his cruiser to clear the path, he was shot repeatedly with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Police still don’t know why — or who pulled the trigger.
