INDIANAPOLIS - An Indianapolis mother has been charged with felony crimes after police said they found her overdosed on heroin in her crashed car with her two babies in the back seat.
Neighbors called 911 on Saturday after seeing a small car plow into a parked vehicle in the 5800 block of Port Irving Drive, near Interstate 465 and Rockville Road on the west side of Indianapolis. Police arrived and reported finding the car still in gear and running with the driver slumped over the wheel and drooling.
Police said the driver was making loud snoring sounds and could not be awoken, and the first arriving officer then immediately realized that two babies were in the back seat of the wrecked car. One was a 1-year-old girl and the other was a boy born just one month ago, according to police.
Neither child appeared to be injured, but an ambulance was called for the mother.
Medics arrived and administered the drug Narcan , which is used to revive people after a heroin overdose.
Officers write in court papers that the mother then woke up and admitted she had just injected heroin at a nearby apartment and did not remember anything after getting into the car with her two babies.
Felony charges of neglect of a dependent and possession of narcotics were lodged against Cydney Craft, 20, of Indianapolis. She faced a judge Wednesday and then posted bail to be released from jail.
A review of her criminal record found past arrests for two different cases of burglary or theft in 2011 and 2012, as well as an underage drinking arrest.
Police said a pink bag found near her hand contained three syringes, with police finding heroin still loaded in one of them. Lab tests also confirmed heroin was stuffed into a green balloon, which was also inside that pink bag.
Craft was also charged with a misdemeanor count of possessing drug paraphernalia since officers said they found several spoons with dried cotton, believed to have been used to cook the heroin. Several rubber bands were also found, with officers saying they likely were used to "tie off" or make a vein more prominent in order to inject the heroin.
Medics examined both babies and found neither had been injured in the crash of their mother's car.
Both babies were turned over to Department of Child Services.
Craft told police that she used heroin before her most recent pregnancy and had just started up again, according to court documents.
