MILAN, Ind. -- A 16-year-old boy pleaded guilty Tuesday to killing a 68-year-old woman during a robbery in Indiana.
Sean David Nichols was tried as an adult in Ripley Circuit Court for the death of Nancy Hershman, 68, on Dec. 30, 2012 during a robbery at her Milan, Ind. home. Hershman was shot and killed during a struggle for a gun.
Nichols was arrested along with Allison Moore, 22, and a second 16-year-old in their Colerain Township home on Jan. 5, 2013 by investigators with Indiana State Police along with assistance from the Colerain Township Police Department.
In testimony, Nichols said Moore shot Hershman when she confronted the group.
Nichols was sentenced to 50 years with 20 years suspended to probation. He could be eligible for parole after 15 years for good behavior.
After the sentencing Dawn Evans, Hershman's daughter, said if her mother had known what the trio wanted, she would have given them anything.
"I think if she realized what was going on, whatever money she had in her purse, she would have handed it to them. I really do. They didn't have to shoot her for it," Evans said. "There's a huge giant whole in our life and the community."
The other two defendants charged in the incident remain in custody and are awaiting their trials which are scheduled for March 31 and July 7, 2014, respectively.
