Seventeen puppies and their mother were dumped on the side of a road in Indiana, and authorities are seeking the public’s help in catching the culprit.

Karen Read was driving late Friday night when she saw her headlights reflected in a pair of eyes, The Times in Munster reported. She initially thought it was a raccoon.

“Then I saw a mother dog and countless puppies,” she told The Times.

Read also said she saw someone in a gold SUV speed off when she arrived.

She, her husband and other local residents collected all of the puppies that night.

The dogs were taken to a Porter County animal shelter before Lakeshore PAWS, a local foster organization, took in the mother dog and her puppies.

The dogs are scheduled to be ready for adoption by Saturday.
