JACKSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Jackson Township police said they have identified 24 high school boys basketball players who were allegedly videotaped in the shower by their coach.
Scott Studer, 46, was arrested Wednesday on multiple charges. He remains in Stark County Jail on $2 million bond and will appear in court Nov. 21.
"I didn't believe it," said Elizabeth East, a sophomore at Jackson High School. East said Studer greeted students with a smile at the front desk of the school, where he was also employed as a building aide.
"That can't happen in Jackson. That would never happen here," East said.
"It's creepy to think about," said Cody Arnold, a junior at Jackson High School, who knew of Studer.
"He would position the camera in the boys in the shower area and then he would take that camera home with him, download the images to his hard drive, then take the camera back," said Jackson Township Police Chief Dave Zink.
Zink said there's no indication Studer disseminated the footage and there's no evidence he showered with his players.
The discovery of the camera and footage was made in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Inspector. The inspector recently executed a search warrant at Studer's home for illegal use of nudity-oriented material. During the search, the inspector discovered a hard drive containing footage of basketball players.
"You never would think that that would happen," said Sam Bourquin, host of "The Sam Bourquin Show" on Newstalk 1480 and a longtime announcer for Jackson High School basketball games.
Bourquin described Studer as an outcast, but someone who was dedicated to his players.
Students said Studer, who was in his 27th season as a basketball coach for the Jackson High School polar bears, was well liked among the student athletes.
"They're always talking to him. They're always surrounding his desk," said East.
Studer, who graduated from Jackson High School, resigned from his position on Wednesday.
