MAYSVILLE, Ky. - The Kentucky Auditor Office released its Mason County Schools report and calls the findings "shameful."

Nearly $200,000 of expenditures were found to have been used on elaborate meals, fine hotels, and "had no clear business purpose," according to Kentucky Auditor Adam Edelen.

"Every teacher I know pays for classroom supplies out of their own pocket," said Edelen in a news release. "Property owners never see relief on their tax bills. The findings in this report are shameful."

The 176 page document shows that the superintendent, associate superintendent, five employees and all current board members have loosely reported or used school district credit cards.

9 News called the school board office on Thursday to get comment from the superintendent, but was told by the phone attendant "someone will call you back within 24 hours."

Items listed on credit card statements included a Wii gaming system for more than $500, dinners at upscale restaurants exceeding $1,400, kids meals during out of town trips and lavish hotels, according to Edelen.

"In a district that receives nearly half of its revenue from the Commonwealth, all taxpayers - not just those in Mason County - ought to be alarmed," said Edelen.  "Parents today are forced to spend money not just on pencils and notebooks, but paper towels and other janitorial supplies.

"I am committed to making sure every education dollar in this Commonwealth is spend for the benefit of our kids," said Edelen.

The audit was initiated because a referral by The Office of Education Accountability (OEA).

The Auditor will sent the report to the Internal Revenue Service to see if any more investigation is needed.
