CINCINNATI - More than 200 lifeguards put their aquatic skills to the test in the American Red Cross Regional Lifeguard Competition.
The swimmers had brief relief from Sunday's weather once they took a splash in the pool, but the competition heated up quickly.
"We're excited to see who comes out on top," Jincey Yemaya, Cincinnati Recreation Commission aquatic director said during the event.
The winners of the competition are:
- Kettering Recreation Center
- CRC - Ryan Pool
- Madeira Swim & Tennis
- Mount Lookout Swim Club
- CRC - Hirsch Pool
- CRC - Ziegler Pool
- CRC - Mt. Adams Pool
- CRC - Pleasant Ridge Pool
Judges scored the teams of four on spinal management techniques, first aid and CPR. In one of the most challenging drills, contestant-hopefuls had to pick up a brick from the bottom of the pool and swim to the top in record time.
The 16th annual event was held at the Ryan Pool, located at 2856 Fischer Place in Westwood.
Yemaya said the competition allows competitors to show off some of the numerous skills it takes to be a lifeguard.
"You have to be able to swim well. You have to get through the Red Cross training program and get certified," she said. "You have to drill every week. So this is a fun way to drills this week."
Winners from the competition will compete in the state championship on Aug. 4.
