OXFORD, Ohio - Three years before Rep. Paul Ryan addressed a Virginia crowd as the vice presidential hopeful, he addressed Miami University graduates during commencement.
Ryan and Rep. Steve Driehaus of Ohio addressed the graduates May 9, 2009 to celebrate Miami's 200th year of existence. University president David C. Hodge noted the impact Miami graduates have had upon the national political landscape.
"Miami has had an astonishing impact on our country throughout its 200 years, from members of Lincoln's cabinet, through U.S. President Benjamin Harrison to our sitting members of Congress today," Hodge said in a statement announcing the 2009 commencement speakers. "We will celebrate Miami's remarkable record of leadership and public service of our alumni during our Bicentennial commencement. We have every reason to believe that Miami's Bicentennial Class of 2009 will continue this tradition of leadership in the nation and the world."
