COLUMBUS — State Senator Bill Beagle, R-Tipp City, will run for John Boehner’s seat in Ohio’s 8th Congressional District.

WCPO media partner the Journal-News reports Beagle announced his candidacy Tuesday.

“I’m running because, let’s see, you know governing is about good decisions,” the 50-year-old legislator and former Tipp City city councilman told the Dayton Daily News. “Governing is about wisdom and it’s about working together… I wanted to take that attitude to the General Assembly and now I want to take it to Congress.”

Beagle is up against at least one contender so far, 33-year-old tea party favorite J.D. Winteregg, who ran against Boehner in 2014. Winteregg gained notoriety during that campaign for a parody ad posted to YouTube accusing Boehner of “electile dysfunction.”

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones and West Chester Trustee George Lang also have expressed interest in vying for the former speaker's seat.

Governor John Kasich has yet to set a date for the special election that will determine Boehner’s replacement. The winner will serve the remainder of Boehner’s term through the end of 2016, and will have to run for re-election in November 2016 for the next two-year term.
