CINCINNATI – Confusion over state law resulted in campaign workers being expelled by poll workers at Saint Lawrence Catholic Church on Warsaw Avenue.
The Rev. Mark T. Watkins at Saint Lawrence told the campaign workers they were not allowed on the church's property. The dispute resulted in Hamilton County Board of Elections Director Amy Searcy intervening.
It turned out, according to Searcy, that state and federal governments essentially rent the church on election day. For all practical purposes the rental makes the church public property for the day, allowing the campaign workers onto church grounds.
Ohio law does state that campaign workers or electioneers must stay 100 feet away from the polling place.
