CINCINNATI -- A police search turned violent when SWAT officers say a man fired a shotgun at them Friday morning.
The incident happened at about 6:38 a.m. at a residence in the 3400 block of Warsaw Avenue in Price Hill.
The SWAT team was serving a warrant for the arrest of 32-year-old Rico Jones and was making entry into Jones' apartment when he opened fire, according to acting Police Chief Paul Humphries.
None of the officers were injured by the shotgun blast and they immediately withdrew, the chief said. The officers were eventually able to talk Jones out of the home without incident. A woman was found in the home with Jones but her status has not been released.
Humphries said police across the city are targeting the most violent offenders as part of a response to violent crime in the city. He said District 3 in particular is making a big push.
"We are targeting the worst of the worst, those individuals who we know are involved in violent crime, drug sales and any activities that are part of that," Humphries said.
The chief said Jones has been involved in shoot-outs and drug deals in the past and was known to police.
"He's part of the violence that is plaguing our neighborhoods," Humphries said.
Before breaking through Jones' door, officers said they announced their presence several times.
"He knew they were coming for him," Humphries said. "Part of this message has got to be, ‘This has got to stop.' We're not going to stop targeting those who are causing all the violence in our neighborhoods."
Officials said they are putting significant police resources toward that goal and Humphries said his department is promising to abate the violence.
Jones was charged with three counts of attempt murder, three counts of felonious assault, one count of possessing a weapon while under disability, two counts of trafficking in drugs and one count of possession of drugs.
Jones has was arrested earlier this year on a weapons charge.
