FLORENCE, Ky. - Police continue to investigate the murder of a female employee killed at a Florence, Ky., business Tuesday morning.
The Boone County Sheriff's Office responded to the Thermo Fisher Scientific facility, located at 7383 Empire Drive, for reports of a death around 7:20 a.m. Authorities found Michelle Mockbee, 42, dead inside the building.
Mockbee's death was deemed a homicide Tuesday afternoon. She was assaulted near the office area of the building, according to Boone County Sheriff's Office's Public Information Officer Tom Scheben. Officials did not find a weapon at the scene.
More than one dozen investigators processed the crime scene for several hours.
Police say Mockbee, a Fort Mitchell resident and mother of two, left her residence around 6 a.m. to go to work. She was an employee with Thermo Fisher Scientific for 16 years.
Thermo Fisher Scientific released the following statement about the employee's death:
Earlier this morning, an alleged homicide occurred at the Florence, Kentucky, distribution facility of Thermo Fisher Scientific. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of the victim. Our focus now is on cooperating with the law enforcement investigation, supporting our employees and assuring the safety of our facility.
At this time, the Boone County Sheriff's Department is leading an investigation into this issue and we have no further comment.
Detectives also spent hours looking for evidence at Mockbee's home in Fort Mitchell Tuesday night.
Neighbors say when Mockbee wasn't working, she was spending time with her children. Friends say she would take extra time off during the week just to be with her family.
Officials have not released any additional information at this time.
