FLORENCE, Ky. - Several family pets were killed Thursday as the result of a two-story blaze at a Florence, Ky. home.

Florence firefighters responded to the 10 block of Julia Avenue at approximately 2:30 p.m. after receiving reports of heavy smoke and fire coming from the first floor of a two-story brick residence.

Due to the progression of the fire and high winds, fire crews were forced to battle the blaze from the exterior of the building, fire officials said.

Fire crews managed to bring the blaze under control in about 45 minutes, fire officials said, but they remained on the scene to extinguish "hot spots" for several hours afterward.

There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters, but officials report that several family pets were killed during the fire.

While an estimate on property damage was not released, fire investigators say substantial damage was sustained by both floors of the residence.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
