In case you were too busy to notice, there were some major moves in the digital world the week of March 11. Here's a recap.
Goodbye, Google Reader
Google announced that Google Reader, arguably one of the world's most popular RSS readers, will be shutting down on July 1. According to a Mashable article, Google is seeing a decline in usage, possibly due to growth of platforms like Twitter. Professionals who aggregate a heavy amount of news content throughout the day are going to feel the loss of the 7-year-old reader as they consider moving to another platform.
Facebook rolls out a new Timeline...
Thursday John Matarese shared the news that Facebook Timeline was going to see yet another redesign. If you aren't a fan of the Timeline layout – i.e. you think it's too clunky and difficult to navigate because of posts in two columns – chances are, you'll appreciate this latest move by Facebook. This announcement comes on the heels of the news that your News Feed is getting a makeover pretty soon (some profiles have already begun to change over).
…and welcomes the hashtag to the family
Speaking of changes on Facebook, the news that's rocking the social media world this week is this: the hashtag is coming to the world's leading social platform. Much as Twitter uses a hashtag to create and track conversations, the Facebook hashtag will aggregate conversations so you can see what your friends are talking about. So to all Facebook users who were posting hashtags on Facebook before it was "cool"…keep it up!
@Pontifex is back on Twitter
The Tweets were archived and the news feed was silent in the days following the departure of Pope Benedict XVI on Feb. 28. But rejoice, Tweeters: Pope Francis is back at it! The first new tweet from the @Pontifex account, sent after the worldwide introduction of the new Holy Father: "HABEMUS PAPAM FRANCISCUM!"
