WALTON, Ky. - A Boone County grand jury indicted the mayor of Walton, Ky., Wednesday for allegations that he pocketed money from the Boone County Water District.
Phil Trzop, who is also the former Boone County Water Distrcit Manager, is charged with abuse of public trust after allegedly stealing from taxpayers while he was in the role.
Investigators say Trzop sold scrap metal acquired during water line repairs and then kept some of the profits.
The water district sold more than $30,000 in scrap metal over the past three years, money that should have been put in Boone County's general fund. Deputies said Trzop used much of the money to pay his employees Christmas bonuses, however, $10,000 was unaccounted for until Trzop confessed to have some of it at his home.
While Trzop is still the mayor of Walton, he was suspended without pay from his role as Boone County Water District manager.
He is out of jail on $20,000 bond. His arraignment date has not yet been set.
If convicted, Trzop faces five to 10 years in prison.
