NEWPORT, Ky. - Newport Fire Chief Paul Uebel announced his retirement as Newport police confirmed he was connected to an ongoing investigation.
Uebel's retirement is effective immediately and Fire Capt. Randy Childress said Uebel disclosed his decision Wednesday.
The Newport Police Department confirmed to 9 On Your Side Friday that Uebel is part of an ongoing investigation, but did not release any details of that case and officers would not say how Uebel is specifically connected to the investigation.
There will be a meeting on Monday to discuss the specifics of the case, officials said.
Uebel was out of the office on Friday. Childress said Capt. Patrick Krogman has been named the acting fire chief.
Uebel has been with the department for at least 20 years and is eligible for retirement, Childress said.
City officials have not commented on the ongoing investigation, or Uebel's decision.
