World Cup: Get to know the American soccer team

Only 5 USA players have World Cup experience

When it was announced in May that Landon Donovan, American soccer’s all-time leading international goal scorer, was cut from the U.S.A.’s 2014 World Cup roster, many on-the-fence futbol fans were left wondering who did make the team.

After all, the 32-year-old California native was arguably America’s most well-known soccer player after his legendary tiebreaking goal against Algeria in the 2010 World Cup. Major League Soccer’s website called the play, “The most iconic goal in US men’s national team history.” Yet, Donovan won’t be on the pitch when this year’s tournament starts June 12 in Brazil.

A largely more inexperienced group of players will represent the Red, White & Blue instead. Only five men on the 2014 squad have World Cup experience - the fewest for the Americans since 1990. This rawness led head coach Jurgen Klinsmann to say, “We cannot win the World Cup because we are not at that level yet,” according to the New York Times.

Despite Donovan’s absence, a handful of marquee players are still on the roster including team captain Clint Dempsey, the U.S.A.’s second all-time international goal scorer. Here is a rundown of the members of the 2014 United States men’s national soccer team:
