ZEPHYRHILLS, FL - When 84-year-old Powerball jackpot winner Gloria C. Mackenzie was announced, a woman who Mackenzie said "was kind enough" to allow her to cut the line, realized just how close she was to purchasing Mackenzie's winning ticket.
This kind woman, Mindy Crandell, 34, shows no remorse for her costly gesture.
"Things are meant to be for a reason," the near-winner told Yahoo! News .
When Mackenzie stepped in front of her in the Publix line on May 18, Crandell was busy tending to one of her two daughters.
"My 10-year-old said, ‘Mom, there's a lady in front of us.' I noticed that the lady was there. Didn't pay a lot of mind to it," Crandell told Yahoo! News.
The woman at the counter gestured for Crandell to reclaim her spot in line; however, she declined and allowed Mackenzie to "go ahead."
Both Crandell and Mackenzie purchased their tickets and left.
"The joke was, that's the lady that's going to win it. I was like, ‘Yeah right. No one is going to win from little Zephryllis,'" Crandell said.
Crandell was still being teased by her family later that night when Mackenzie matched all five numbers, including the Powerball. The winning ticket was worth over $590 million.
