Middletown police, firefighter unions decry possible layoffs

CINCINNATI -- Police and firefighter union members in Middletown are decrying a plan they say would cut staff in both departments.

Firefighters from Local 336 and police from Lodge 36 are slated to hold a news conference 4 p.m. Thursday at City Hall to discuss the cuts.

The groups said a budget plan from City Manager Judy Gilleland would cut 15 firefighters and 11 police officers from the budget.

The union members said they currently have grants that would cover the salaries of six firefighters and four police officers that run through the end of 2014.

The groups claim Gilleland’s budget proposal would terminate those grants and forfeit the money.

Several community members will be speaking at the event in addition to the union leaders.
