Woman Pulled Over, Robbed By Fake Cop

While driving this afternoon,  a woman says she noticed flashing red and blue lights behind her.

Like we're taught to do, she pulled over. However, the man who pulled behind her was not a police officer.

Just after 3 p.m. an Independence woman tells police she was taking a left onto Mt. Zion Road in Union, Ky. when she noticed flashing red and blue lights in her rear view mirror.

She tells investigators the man was driving a black Ford Crown Victoria with tinted windows.

There were flashing lights in the grill of the car and on the dash.

She then pulled onto Duncan Drive, which is the nearest side street for what she thought would be a routine traffic stop. But, it wasn't.

"When he approached the car, he brandished his handgun,” said Tom Scheben, of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office. “’Give me your purse!,’ from there he took the wallet out, removed the money from the wallet, gave them both back to her and left."

Police say that's because the man is not a police officer and they're still looking for him.

"We take personal offense to it because this is what we do for a living,” said Scheben. “And when we light them up to stop somebody for whatever reason, we don't want them to worry if we're legitimate or not."

But that's exactly what Stephen Payne, who lives on Duncan Drive, says he's going to do.

“The Boone County police officers drive white cars with brown lettering. If they're undercover, I'm not going to, you know, I'm going to look out for my safety and my children's and my family's safety,” said Payne.

Police describe the man as 5'10'', 180 to 190 pounds, wearing a dark suit with a purple tie – and he got away without anyone seeing him.

"He didn't pull around in front of her where she would have got a better description of the car,” said Scheben. “He backed out of the side street onto Mt. Zion and then headed on up toward the interstate."

Unfortunately the incident happened less than a mile from I-75.

However, police say he may still be around and they're asking anyone who knows anything to call Crime Stoppers at (513) 352-3040 or text (513) 352-3050.
