Venus Williams decisively defeated Olga Govortsova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, at the Western and Southern Financial Group Open Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Williams was on her game, notching eight aces and 91 percent of her first serves against the 21-year-old from Belarus to take home the second-round victory. Williams made quick work of the youngster, putting her away in a tidy one hour and six minutes.

This is Williams’ first appearance in Cincinnati and she is gearing up for the U.S. Open slated to begin Aug. 31.

In the match leading up to Williams’ defeat of Govortsova, six seed Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Lucie Safarova 6-3, 6-7, 7-6. It took two tie breakers for Kuznetsova to put Safarova away.

In the two hour and 18 minute affair, Kuznetsova collected 10 aces along the way. It was a fairly evenly matched game, as each woman won two thirds of her service points.
