The man who brought smiles to the faces of thousands of Tri-State children has passed away.
Al Lewis, or "Uncle Al" as most knew him, was a pioneer of children's programming in the early years of television.
Lewis produced and hosted his own daily children's show "The Uncle Al Show" on WCPO. He was perhaps best known for entertaining children with his accordion.
"The Uncle Al Show" debuted on WCPO on June 12, 1950. Uncle Al's wife, Wanda Lewis, joined the show in 1956 as the character "Captain Windy," drawing pictures for the children and handling many of the educational aspects of the program. Together they entertained local children for 35 years.
Thousands of Tri-State children appeared on his show over the years until it ended in 1985. The Lewises retired from WCPO Channel 9 in 1989.
After the show ended, Uncle Al continued to live in Highland County, where he remained very active in the community. He passed away peacefully Saturday morning at the age of 84.
He will be laid to rest on Saturday, March 7 in Hillsboro.
