Tristate General Motors dealers anxiously wait to learn their fate on Friday, as the auto maker struggles to cut costs.

Just one day after Chrysler announced plans to cut eliminate 789 of its U.S. 3,200 dealerships, GM is expected to make a similar announcement. Local GM dealers are now watching their mailboxes in anticipation of similar official express letters, telling them if they'll have to go.

There are currently around 43 General Motors dealers in the Tri-State, and unofficial word from GM is the company is looking to cutback its dealership network by a quarter to almost half, depending on the brand. That could mean cutting several Tri-State dealerships.

On Thursday, Chrysler announced plans to revoke contract agreements with seven local dealers in its efforts to reorganize.

Some of those dealerships have hinted they don't plan to close, and may instead change their business models to possibly sell used cars, or may even look to affiliating with other car companies.

The General Motors announcement could have an even bigger impact, as their plans could include cutting more than just seven local dealerships.

Once again, we'll be on top of the announcement of this major car industry shake-up. Look for details on which dealerships are getting pink slips here at wcpo.com and later with stories on 9News.
