INDEPENDENCE, Ky. -- It seems wrong for a city named Independence to not have an Independence Day celebration, but that is nearly what happened in Northern Kentucky.
When a major sponsor of the 11th Annual Independence Day Celebration in Independence Kentucky pulled out, organizers were left $10,000 short and the event was almost canceled.
That is until businesses and members of the community pitched in.
Bill Winegardner has owned the Ace Hardware in Independence less than two years and says he's just one of many local businesses that donated $1,000.
"The businesses stepped forward. And I think it says a lot about the community. We're very appreciative of the support we've got from the community since we've been here and I feel it's important that we give back to the community," Winegardner said.
As far as the celebration, it's safe to say it's not going to be small.
Organizers are expecting Memorial Park to be packed with more than 45 vendors, two live bands, and a fireworks show that rivals any in the Tri-State.
"I got the opportunity to sit out in my parking lot last year and watch the fireworks. And saw all the people and heard the crowd and said to myself we got to be part of this," Winegardner said.
