CINCINNATI (AP) -- Activists in Cincinnati say they have enough signatures to get an anti-streetcar issue on the November ballot.
City officials have proposed a $185 million streetcar system.
Opponents say they have more than the 6,150 petition signatures necessary to let local voters decide whether the project should proceed.
The Cincinnati Chapter of the NAACP has joined fiscal conservatives in fighting the proposal. A group of opponents called Cincinnatians for Progress contends that blocking the plan would threaten other economic development opportunities and send federal
grants to other cities.
Those against the streetcar plan say it's a bad idea in general but is particularly ill-timed because the city is facing service cuts and possible police layoffs.
