In six weeks,
Argosy Casino will open the largest riverboat gaming floor in the country.
With the expansion comes more jobs.
Argosy began the comprehensive expansion last year, then the economy sank.
The casino laid off 80 people and watched part of its market share head north to two other casinos in the Indianapolis area.
General Manager Tony Rodeo says he's still confident. "To go from our current casino which is really a small little riverboat to this incredible facility, I think really is wonderful for all of our employees and I think its wonderful for the city of Lawrenceburg and I think its wonderful for the entire Cincinnati region.
"The regional gaming markets are fairing much better than the destination gaming markets like Las Vegas and Atlantic City and our property in particular continues to do very well."
Construction crews are finishing the final touches on a riverboat that will trump the old one.
The new riverboat will be able to hold over 8,000 people. The old one could only hold 3,800.
The number of slot machines will increase from 2,400 to 3,300.
Rodeo says he has to finish hiring the 250 positions needed to staff the new riverboat.
"We're adding a food and beverage outlet and bar so we also need a lot of help in the food and beverage areas as well as housekeeping and general maintenance positions," said Rodeo.
Rodeo says he now needs someone to get rid of the old boat. "There's the possibility we could relocate it to one of our other jurisdictions or sell it. I don't know if you know anyone that's in the market for a large riverboat casino, we're still open to bids"
